game problems please help

ok I have a few questions and you reply apreciated quickly. When i installed gta 3 and gta vice city both of them sayd the d3d8.dll is missing. so i downloaded it and i put it in my system file and i also put them in the game file. but it would start and then say there is an unhandled exception. so did i do something wrong ? if so what and how do i fix it. to let you know ive had these games working on my comp before and i dont know wats wrong
