Ripping a Dvd for burning for Backup

Hi can someone please help me I am trying to copy a Movie Dvd for Backup but I do not know what to do I am using a dvd ripper but when I try and read the Dvd i get nothing can you please advise me!!!!!
I am just a learner on this
