dvd not working

when i put a dvd or cd into the player that came with the computer it freezes the computer completley and i have to turn the computer off by holding the on/off button in. its a dell and i think the drive is hitatchi or tsst corp. thats what it says in "my computer" under dvd-rw drive. have run avg and not found anything. can any one help. thank you
