DVD Player Not working Samsung sd-612b

I have a samsung sd-612b dvd rom in moms computer. The darn thing only recognises cd's not dvd's. Computer has win dvd on it but it still will not read dvd's. Computer locks up when I put a dvd in the drive and try to open/read it in my computer. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated!
