how do i get computer to find cd drive?

Check in the BIOS to see if there's an option to boot from a USB device, if there isn't then I'm afraid your stuffed

sorry if this sounds daft but being a novice can be frustrating. I can get a list on the screen if I type in dir at 'A' promt would it be in that list or am completely in the wrong direction. If I am wrong can you tell me how to get into the bios.

To get in the BIOS you normally have to press a key during the POST process, ie when it checks the memory, drives etc. It should say at the bottom of the screen something like Press F10 for Setup, press whatever key it says when that appears.
