Canon's N676U scanner. Queen bitch of the Universe

For a company that has produced great stuff, Canon should hang their corporate head in shame at the downright bitchiness of their N676U scanner. Occasionally it works, and heaven smiles, but relocate a USB connection or switch it from laptop to desk and it acts like a woman spurned - with "INSUFFICIENT MEMORY" or "CANNOT SELECT TWAIN SOURCE" as just two of it's complaints. I tried updating the driver from Canon, even reinstalling the XP S/P2 - nothing works. Any help?
