Sony Vio locking up

I have a Sony vio 801 laptop computer which I recently had to rebuild the windows98se OS on. Even previously before it crashed if left switched on
for a length of time without much interaction the mouse would stop responding and it would generaly slow up. Regarding this problem would
it be more likely to be the a fault with the memory or the CPU. I would be
greatfull for some idea's as to what to look for
