Running an older type pc with 486 processor and current 200 mb hard disk which is failing. OS is DOS ver.6.0 with Win.3. Would like to replace the hard disk (type 47) with a more modern one - is it just a matter of plugging it up or are there formatting considerations which will preclude this

There will probably be a limitation of how large a drive your motherboard will support. If you know the make/model of motherboard have a look on the manufacturers site it may give you info on the max size it supports. It's also worth updating the BIOS to the latest version as well.
